Question 1

How do you answer "Tell me about yourself" in an interview?

Accepted Answer

Start in the present — one sentence on your current role, your scope, and a signature result Bridge to the past — select only the one or two experiences that explain why you are credible for THIS role Pivot to the future — name why this specific role is the logical next chapter of the story Land the plane in 90-120 seconds and stop talking — let the interviewer ask the follow-up

Question 2

Why do interviewers ask "Tell me about yourself"?

Accepted Answer

This opener looks casual, but it is a structured evaluation of how you curate information. Interviewers are testing whether you can distill a career into a relevant 90-second narrative, whether you understand what this specific role actually needs, and how you communicate when there is no script to follow. Most hiring managers form a working hypothesis about you during this first answer, and the rest of the interview often just confirms or challenges it.

Question 3

What mistakes should you avoid when answering "Tell me about yourself"?

Accepted Answer

Reciting your resume in chronological order — the interviewer has read it; they want the story, not the table of contents Opening with childhood or personal biography — keep it professional unless the interviewer explicitly takes it there Rambling past two minutes — a five-minute answer signals you can't prioritize information Ending without a forward hook — always land on why you are excited about THIS role Memorizing a script word-for-word — it sounds rehearsed and collapses at the first interruption

Question 4

What follow-up questions come after "Tell me about yourself"?

Accepted Answer

What are you most proud of in your current role? Why are you interested in our company specifically? You mentioned a project — walk me through exactly how you did that What would your current manager say is your biggest strength?
